CITY CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE

As part of Austin’s goal to reach zero waste as a community by 2040, the city has developed a social innovation program to help turn valuable raw materials that are currently leaving local businesses, nonprofits and institutions as waste into the foundation of new social enterprises. Named the [Re]Verse Pitch Competition and launched in 2015, this competition gives local businesses and institutions the chance to partner with entrepreneurs to develop innovative reuse solutions for their byproducts.

DESCRIPTION OF POLICY

[Re]Verse is a  startup pitch contest that flips the standard pitch competition on its head. Instead of startups pitching their ideas to potential investors, it’s Austin companies pitching their needs to potential innovators.  The [Re]Verse Pitch Competition helps turn valuable raw materials that are currently leaving local businesses, non-profits, and institutions as waste into the raw materials for new or expanding social enterprises.  The winner gets $10,000 from the City of Austin.
