CITY CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES

In March 2018, Circular Glasgow hosted the first city-led challenge on Circle Lab asking citizens and companies from cities across the world how local businesses can improve the economic, environmental and social legacy of major city conferences and events. The lab invited participants to submit their ideas and solutions for the following question: How can small to medium sized local businesses improve the legacy of major city conferences and events? Every year, Glasgow plays host to a wide range of major events and conferences. In 2017 alone, the city recorded over 3 million attendances across a variety of high-profile events including the Homeless World Cup to the BBC 6 Music Festival. The city of Glasgow also understands the challenges involved in the production of these events. Circle Lab was an opportunity to support the city’s commitment to sustainability and create practical solutions that could be implemented within the city’s venues.

DESCRIPTION OF INITIATIVE

Circle Lab is an online hackathon event to find a circular solution to a local challenge. Circle Lab sought solutions to make Glasgow’s event industry more circular.  From over 200 contributions, the three winning ideas include a deposit-based re-use system for food and drink containers, circular designs for event marketing and branding, and a scheme that will repurpose organic waste into energy and fertilisers.

WHO’S INVOLVED?

Glasgow chamber of commerce, Zero waste Scotland, Circle Economy and a crowd of contributors worldwide.
